News & Viewsback to overviewNews - July 2010 Ryan Air announces major new hub based at Málaga Airport The low cost airline, Ryan Air have announced plans to create a major hub for new and existing routes from the enlarged Málaga airport. The budget airline has existing routes across the Spanish mainland however it is also looking to expand its connections with the rest of Europe and North Africa. Direct flights will be available to Berlin, Gothenburg, Krakow, Oslo, Paris, Santiago, Stockholm, Venice and Wroclaw. In total, 39 low cost routes will be available from Malaga airport which will help to sustain more than 2,000 jobs at the airport. This is excellent news for residents in the Málaga area as well as those people considering the purchase of a property in the Málaga province. Málaga – city of culture 2016 The decision is soon to be made as to whether Málaga continues its quest to become the Spanish entry for the European City of Culture in 2016. The benefits that this hosting could bring are enormous and would stretch across the whole province of Málaga. The first cut of nominations happens in October of this year and it is hoped that Málaga’s strong bid will keep them in the running. The benefits of hosting this prestigious title for the year will be long-lasting and will be both economic as well as cultural. As can be seen by past host cities, the investment into infrastructure, the huge focus that is placed on the city and the growth in public awareness leads to a range of growth areas. Investment into public transport and communication, foreign investment, a huge tourism boost and a timely boost to publicity could be the ideal tonic for Málaga and the Costa del Sol following the austerity measures recently announced.
