News & Viewsback to overviewNews - October 2007 New Airport for Antequera! The long discussed airport north of Antequera has been given the green light. The purpose of the new airport is to take away some of the cargo traffic that currently uses the main airport at Málaga and is also supposed to receive a number of low cost airlines. Current estimates for the number of passengers that will use the airport are 500,000 people per year although this will depend greatly upon the allocation of airlines that will be allowed to serve the airport. This new destination will open up areas of rural Andalucia that have, previously, been overlooked by prospective buyers. Construction of the new airport is planned to start in 2010 and this is likely to have a very positive affect on property prices within the immediate area. The overall expansion and development of Antequera proceeds apace and this, to a great degree, complements the beautiful, historic city centre rather than fighting with it. The effect of this new airport will also improve the job prospects for thousands of Andalucians who will be needed for the construction. Whilst jobs are under threat from the drop in residential construction, this new project will help to support the local economy and individuals’ prospects.
