El Torcal Natural ParkThe El Torcal mountain range and National Park provides a quite unique backdrop to the village of Villanueva de la Concepción. Sitting within the southern foothills of the mountain, Villanueva de la Concepción is the ideal starting point for a tour of El Torcal and its fantastic limestone formations. El Torcal was created millions of years ago when the earth’s crust slipped and created a huge cleft in the landscape. Over the years this limestone edifice has been weather worn and what is left are some of the most unusual rock formations to be seen in the world. Nowadays the El Torcal National Park is home to a variety of wildlife including the mountain Ibex that can often be seen when strolling through one of the signposted walking routes. These Ibex cling to the craggy rocks and often provide walkers with a superb photo opportunity with their natural inquisitiveness. In addition to Ibex you will often see a variety of birds of prey including eagles, buzzards and vultures soaring with the thermals created by the sun, the walls of the mountain and the height of the mountain itself. Some humans do inhabit the mountain, albeit normally during the hours of daylight and normally with the help of ropes and cramp irons. This area is well known for its rock climbing and many visitors during the spring and autumn will be attempting to climb some of the sheer faces of the mountain. Walkers are in abundance and this can, especially in the summer months, be a little off-putting when you see them for the first time from the car park. If you do not want to take one of the signposted routes, you can stroll to the Mirador (viewing point) and enjoy a most spectacular view of Villanueva de la Concepción, Colmenar, Casabermeja, the Montes de Malaga, the sea and the Sierra Nevada mountains. There is currently a visitor centre being constructed and this will offer toilet facilities, restaurant and a history of the El Torcal National Park. back to overviewQuick Links
