ColmenarColmenar is located in the most westerly area of the Axarquia region between Casabermeja and the coast at Velez Malaga. This attractive village has its name deriving from the Spanish for beehive (colmena) so the area is well known for its honey production, it is also known as the Capital of the Montes de Málaga. Whilst the history of the village can be traced back to the end of the Moorish occupation of Iberia, it did not become an independent village until 1777. One of the oldest and most visible relics of the 17th Century is the hermitage of La Sántisima Virgen de la Candeleria. The village itself has a population of approximately 3,600 and sits at a height of 700m above sea level. Due to its position within the Montes de Málaga, it is easy to understand the attraction for both Spanish and the more recent incoming northern Europeans. Access to Málaga can be via the more recent motorway route or the more scenic old road that traverses the Montes and provides some quite stunning views across the city of Málaga itself. The village has a 24hr medical centre, which provides coverage for the village itself, and surrounding hamlets. The village also has an Internet café, a business centre and the usual array of shops, bars and restaurants. back to overviewQuick Links
